How to Make a Skills Video

There are lots of recruiting organizations that will tell you to make a highlight tape. Highlight tapes are made from game footage and don’t allow a coach to adequately evaluate your skills. If they feel you are qualified or the type of player they can develop further they will watch your game play. DO NOT MAKE A VIDEO USING GAME FOOTAGE!

College coaches can watch hundreds of videos each year. Your video should be short and to the point.

Dress is a softball uniform or appropriate softball practice uniform. Do not wear tank tops or shorts that you would not play a game in.

  1. Introduction – You should be on camera introducing yourself. Coaches want to get a feel for you as a person and an athlete. Superimpose your name, city, state, phone and email on the video.
  2. Defense
    1. Infielders – Show yourself fielding 6-7 different types of balls, throwing to bases, and covering bases.
    2. Outfielders – Show yourself catching fly balls, fielding ground balls, and throwing to the bases.
    3. Catchers – Show yourself catching balls from a pitcher, throwing to various bases, fielding bunts, and taking throws to the plate.
    4. Pitchers – Show yourself throwing 3 or 4 of each pitch you throw. Superimpose the type of pitch and speed if possible. Show your fielding ability.
  3. Hitting – Take 4 or 5 swings making good contact, put down a couple of bunts and show explosion out of the box.
  4. Running – Show home to 1st, with times. Show rounding 1st and heading for 2nd. Show times for home-to-home but don’t waste film time showing the full run. Possibly just crossing the plate with your times superimposed.
  5. Sliding – Show your sliding technique.
  6. Closing – Finish with a close up of the player and their contact information again.

If you add music keep it simple and appropiate. Keep the volume down.
