SLV ran off with the lead late in the game in a 9-8 victory over Soquel on Thursday. The Cougars were down 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Katrina Heinemann singled to start the rally. Alura Neill walked, Hailey Lang singled to load the bases. Zoe Mendez followed with an intention walk to put the first run of the rally on the board. With Soquel leading 8-5 and the bases loaded, Jami Van Eyck singled to bring another run across the plate. Melia Hall singled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs to tie the game. With the winning run on third, Kristen Miller re-entered the game to send a grounder back to the pitcher and score the winning run.
Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. SLV collected seven hits and Soquel had 12.
Soquel put the Cougars on their heels when they got things started in the first inning scoring 3 runs. Soquel’s C. Muccilli doubled to bring in two.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Cougars scored two when Mendez homered on a 1-0 count.
After Soquel scored two runs in the top of the fifth, SLV answered with two of their own. Soquel scored when D. Murlatt singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run. SLV then answered when an error scored one run.
Jalie Edgemon pitched the Cougars to victory. She surrendered five runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out two. Murlatt took the loss for Soquel. She went two and a third innings, allowing seven runs on four hits and striking out two.
Madison Reger started the game for the Cougars. She surrendered three runs on five hits over two innings, striking out one and walking zero. A. Allaback started the game for Soquel. She went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one.
SLV smacked one home run on the day. Mendez went deep in the third inning. Hall, Miller, Van Eyck, Courtney Carter, Katrina Heinemann, Lang, and Mendez each collected one hit to lead the team.
Soquel tallied 12 hits on the day. K Valenzuela, J Muhly, C Muccilli, and Brechlers each managed multiple hits for Soquel.
