Angie Fulkerson drove in four runs on one hit to lead San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars past Santa Cruz Cardinals 17-5 on Thursday. Fulkerson hit a grand slam to left field in the third inning, scoring four runs, and walked in the second inning, scoring one.
San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars won thanks in part to 13 runs in the third inning. Abi Krepelka singled, scoring one run, Brooke Reed singled, scoring one run, Sophia Sarmiento grounded out, scoring one run, Fulkerson hit a grand slam to left field, Krepelka doubled, scoring two runs, a wild pitch scored one run, Sarmiento doubled, scoring one run, and Grace Purtscher singled, scoring two runs.
San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the second inning after Rona Lewis induced Reed to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, Sarmiento tripled, scoring two runs, and Fulkerson drew a walk, scoring one run.
Santa Cruz Cardinals flipped the game on its head in the top of the third, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 5-4. The biggest blow in the inning was an error that drove in two.
Purtscher earned the win for San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars. The hurler allowed five hits and five runs (three earned) over five innings, striking out six and walking one. Poppy Coursey took the loss for Santa Cruz Cardinals. The right-handed pitcher went two-thirds of an inning, giving up seven runs on four hits, striking out none and walking three. Lewis stepped in the circle first for Santa Cruz Cardinals. The hurler gave up nine hits and 10 runs over three and one-third innings, striking out five and walking five.
San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars tallied 13 hits in the game. San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars’s Krepelka, the number seven hitter, led San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars with three hits in four at bats. Purtscher collected two hits for San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars in three at bats. San Lorenzo Valley Varsity Cougars had a strong eye at the plate, tallying eight walks for the game. Fulkerson and Elie Colby led the team with two free passes each.
Molly Pisciotta drove the middle of the lineup, leading Santa Cruz Cardinals with two runs batted in. Coursey went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Santa Cruz Cardinals in hits. Santa Cruz Cardinals were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Pisciotta had the most chances in the field with five.
